Change Your Air Filter Monthly
This is something that every technician tells you, but you may be unsure of the reasons. The air filter stops particles from recirculating in your air. It also protects your air conditioner and your heater from damages. But when it’s dirty, the air filter is almost useless. The debris stops airflow from coming into the system with ease. As a result, your air conditioner can struggle to work correctly. The parts work far too hard, and they may even fail after working through so much stress.
- Locating the filter: It may be in the return grille on your wall or ceiling, or it could be on the unit itself. Make sure the heating/AC unit is turned off completely before pulling out the filter.
- Cleaning reusable filters: Most people take their washable filters outside to clean them. First, use a vacuum to get the loose debris off the filter. Then, rinse it with a garden hose (or another source of running water).
- Replacing disposable filters: Consult your owner’s manual to make sure you purchase the right one!
- Putting the filter back: If you’ve just washed the filter, give it a couple of hours to dry before putting it back in. Replacing the filter is simple as it typically slides into place, and there are likely arrows there to guide you on which side faces out.

You should also make sure that there is nothing near your indoor furnace. But you should also schedule maintenance visits 1-2 times a year to check on the state of your system and to get some of the components tuned and cleaned, like the outdoor coil and the blower assembly.
