We know that replacing an air conditioning system is a big decision. Of course, you don’t want to do it way too soon. If the air conditioner can last a couple of years without using exorbitant amounts of energy and still keep you comfortable, you’d much rather keep it around.
But there are times when a replacement is simply a better option, especially when repairing a system comes with a hefty fee. Here’s why we think it’s sometimes a better idea to replace an air conditioner rather than attempt to keep it around past its time.
Repairs Are Going to Be Expensive
You’ve been told that it is possible to repair your broken air conditioner, but you’re not sure if it’s worth it. If an AC repair is going to cost about half the price of a brand new system anyway, we always recommend the replacement instead.
Replacing or repairing a part that is hundreds of dollars might not do much to help. The mismatched components can cause trouble for the system and lead to more repairs soon afterwards. If you have an older system in need of a high-cost repair, it may be more economical to replace the entire system.
It Never Seems to Work Properly
You should ask a technician (or two or three) to investigate first. If you’re having trouble keeping the home cool all the time, there might be a problem within your ducts or with the AC system.
However, if you’ve had this unit for years and it never seems to work properly, it might have to do with the installation. Under-sizing and over-sizing are common problems when it comes to HVAC equipment, and these issues carry a consequence. The system can become overworked cooling a space it’s not designed for, resulting in frequent, costly repairs.
Unfortunately, your system may need to be replaced early. A technician can help you determine if this is the case.
Your Air Conditioner Is Simply Too Old
When an air conditioner is up there in age and it’s not providing quite the level of comfort you want, it may be time to consider a replacement. Investing in a high-efficiency system can save you a lot of money over the years. And doing so before the old AC breaks down saves you the hassle of waiting for an emergency to call for replacement.
